LASER OR SANDBLAST

What’s the difference?

Premium Black is the only stone we recommend lasering photos on because of it natural ability to show contrast between polished and raw surfaces. Its incredible hardness also makes Premium Black the best candidate because laser etchings will stay the longest on the black. So which process is better? Well, it depends on what effect we are trying to achieve with the stone.

Laser etching is a “burning off” of the polished surface by use of a laser. Because of the preciseness of today’s laser technology, a quality laser photo will render the highest degree of detail, bringing out even the smallest characteristics of the subject. Remember, the better the photo, the better the etching. A studio quality original photo is always best, but not required. Laser etching is guaranteed from defect or fading for 100 years.

Sandblasting uses high volumes of air under high pressure mixed with cutting sand to “cut” into the stone. Sandblasted carvings are deeper than laser etchings and will last for centuries. Although a good degree of detail can be achieved through sandblasting, it pales in comparison to the detail of a laser etching. Shape carving, a sanblasting process achieved with a small sandblaster, allows for many components to have a sculpted look. Roses and other florals always illustrate this process best.
